This can include computers, laptops, hard drives, SSDs, servers, mobile devices, tablets, USB drives and other electronic equipment containing data.

We provide secure destruction services including degaussing of magnetic media (such as hard disk drives and backup tapes) so that the storage system is rendered unusable and cannot be reused.

Once you deliver or schedule a collection of your e-waste, we use specialist recycling processes: disassembly, separation of components, recovery of precious metals (copper, zinc, steel), plastics are recycled (in partnership with organisations such as Planet Ark) and hazardous materials are handled responsibly.

Yes. Many Australian states and territories no longer accept general electronic waste disposal at landfill or standard transfer stations because of the environmental risks posed by heavy metals, plastics and batteries. That makes professional e-waste recycling not only responsible, but often mandatory in practice.

Simply throwing old computers or electronic devices into an ordinary waste or recycling stream does not necessarily remove the information stored on them.

Electronic devices can contain sensitive business, customer and employee information. Where an organisation is covered by the Privacy Act, the OAIC states that reasonable steps should be taken to destroy or de-identify personal information when it is no longer required, subject to applicable exceptions.

Deleting a file, emptying the recycle bin or performing a standard factory reset does not automatically mean that information has been irretrievably destroyed.

The appropriate method depends on the type of device, the information stored on it and whether the hardware is being reused or permanently destroyed. The OAIC recognises hardware sanitisation and, where necessary, irretrievable physical destruction as measures that may be appropriate for electronic personal information.

Hard drives can contain significant amounts of business and personal information.

Depending on the equipment and the required destruction process, drives may be securely sanitised or physically destroyed so that the stored information cannot be retrieved.

For organisations subject to APP 11, the OAIC states that where electronic personal information cannot be properly sanitised, reasonable steps may include irretrievably destroying the information.
